Thanksgiving Safety (Part Doux) - Ellijay, GA

In last week’s assisted living and memory care blog post, we mentioned that we’d return once more to the subject of Thanksgiving safety for all of you at-home assisted living or memory care support providers. We realize that safety isn’t the most festive topic to discuss this time of year—but it’s certainly one of the most important. So, we’ll keep this brief but meaningful.

Beyond Fire Safety

Fires aren’t the only unexpected hazards that can arise on Thanksgiving Day. People with food allergies, for instance, should take extra care. If you didn’t prepare the meal yourself, be sure to find out exactly what’s in it. And while it may seem simple, remember to give your full attention to tasks like chopping vegetables and carving the turkey—many holiday injuries happen when we rush or get distracted.

Avoiding Foodborne Illness

Thanksgiving also calls for special caution in the kitchen to prevent food poisoning. The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) offers these helpful reminders:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly when handling uncooked meat.
  • Keep raw meat separate from other foods.
  • Sanitize any surface that touches raw food.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends that oven temperatures be set no lower than 325°F. And even though it’s tempting to relax on the couch after that last slice of pumpkin pie, remember to refrigerate leftovers within two hours to keep everyone safe.

Preventing Choking Hazards

Choking incidents are surprisingly common on Thanksgiving, especially when people are laughing, talking, or taking overly large bites of food. The ACEP advises everyone to chew slowly and cut food into small pieces. And make sure at least one person at your gathering knows how to perform the Heimlich maneuver.

If food does get stuck, try to stay calm. Take a sip of water if you can, or make noise to alert others if you’re unable to breathe. Someone should immediately call 911, while another person—preferably trained in first aid—attempts to help.

A Final Word on Alcohol Safety

Finally, a friendly reminder from all of us here at Manor Lake Assisted Living and Memory Care in Ellijay: if alcoholic beverages are part of your celebration, practice moderation and keep a watchful eye on loved ones. Your care and attentiveness could truly save lives this Thanksgiving.
